Why nightwing never worked
I think it's kind of telling of the comics industry that Damian Wayne in a Robin costume will be better known than Dick Grayson in a Nightwing costume. Good thoughts - BUT Bruce isn't returning as an older Batman; he's returning as pretty much the same age the wonders of time travel he was when he left.
There'll be a new series called Batman Inc, which means the Batman operation goes global which I think is an awesome idea. Bruce is the lead for that one and the new "Batman: The Dark Knight" comic.
Dick remains the lead for the flagship titles of Batman, Batman and Robin, and detective Comics. Also, they've pretty much said that Dick retains his suit and Bruce will get a new one, complete with the yellow oval. Having said that, there's a Batman Beyond miniseries out right now! An interesting take, but not one I can wholly agree with. The first paragraph discussing the delay in Grayson returing to the role of Nightwing fails to acknowledge Didio's own comments.
But Grayson is selling so well, they figured, why not keep him there for a while? And part of that defined his character as well. Third, Chuck Dixon was handed the Nightwing series with very little lead time. He was not the first writer picked for the book. ANd there result was a very generic Daredevil knock-off Blockbuster is clearly Kingpin. Finally, I do agree that Dick works very well with other characters. But he can work well on his own too. Tomasi demonstrated that in the final stories of Nightwing's solo series.
Greetings, sir. Fair points all. I see the profitability of the move, but I am wondering what's taking so long for someone to run around in the Nightwing suit. It's the nature of the business to keep iconic names and costumes running around, after all. We're talking about a business that once said "Superman should be the only Kryptonian, so we need to kill off Supergirl," only to introduce a vastly different Supergirl just a few years later, with the same costume.
Most of them involved Kory who's no longer around or his frustration at not being as good as Bruce which currently manifests in his run as Batman, but is something he's completely cool with NOW as Nightwing. These hangups are hangups he got over - at least as Nightwing.
If you read the piece, I explicitly say that Tim debuted in and Nightwing in It was good. It was getting better. He seemed to be on his way to finding that hook, that emotional grip, hampered only by the Ra's Al Ghul arc.
And then it got taken away from him. Don't get me wrong - I like Dick's run as Batman. Certainly, Batman tried to fix Gotham by fighting crime , but to Dick, Bruce Wayne never tried to fix the systemic issues which made Gotham so susceptible to crime in the first place.
Dick goes even further than that, asking Barbara what's even so heroic about beating up bad guys in the first place. The two talk some more before a homeless man and his son ask if Dick and Barbara have any spare change. Seeing an opportunity to do some genuine good, Dick invites the man and his entire community of homeless people to a local pizza parlor, where Dick pays for everyone's meals.
Though this criticism of Batman and superheroes is quite common, is it a legitimate one? That question is difficult to answer because of the nature of comics continuity. There have undoubtedly been storylines and individual issues where Batman has used his money for social change before, but because stories like that are rarely flashy or exciting, they're easy to forget and even easier for writers to ignore.
Regardless of how Batman uses his money though, Dick's point about superheroes just punching bad guys is less complicated. While Batman might be an effective crime-fighter and has saved countless lives, it's difficult to say that Gotham is any better than when he first started. And forget about the Batman family.
Do any of these Robins like each other? Instead of pushing Nightwing further from Batman i. This is key. Every good hero needs an equally menacing villain. But as we all know, the Titans that birthed Deathstroke no longer exists has this new Deathstroke even met the new Titans?!? My opinion is that if they wanted to save Nighwing, they should have made Deathstroke the major advisory of that character. In the old DCU, that appeared to be happening. He even tried to use Robin Damian Wayne to kill him as Batman which further cemented their adversarial relationship.
He blamed Dick and the team for the death of Grant his son , but it always seemed as if he had it out for Grayson more than the others.
So it would have been perfect to have Deathstroke as the main villain to Nightwing in the New But Deathstroke instead was battling a bunch of other losers who were out to get him.
The big twist being it was his long-thought-dead son Grant was behind it all. And for all I know, he has no idea who Dick Grayson is. We could have started off right there. Nightwing v Deathstroke. Could have been glorious to rebuild this character using the baddest of the bad ass villains. But now, everyone thinks Wilson is tied to Green Arrow. And by the way, why is Brother Blood an Animal Man villain?
Another Titan enemy pawned off to another hero, and this one not even a primary fixture in the DCU? This could have been perfect for Nightwing.
I know Blood has been reimagined and has some minor links to the Titans. But as a new villain for Nightwing having a cult leader or even a serial killer who had obsessed followers all over could have done wonders for the character. Robin had purpose. Dick Grayson had purpose. Heck all sidekicks had purpose in the old DC.
