Not long after, Elvis Presley began performing in Waikiki as well as starring in a handful of movies that were shot at Waikiki Beach.

We saw cop cars, patrols, and local, friendly informational guides all along Kuhio and Kalakaua Avenue. While there are homeless, especially around Kuhio Beach, the area felt safe for us and our toddler.

There is a nightly hula pageant at Kuhio Beach Park, starting with a torch-lighting ceremony and the call of a conch shell. It was delightful. Then jump to another part of the island or another island like Maui for authenticity, outdoors, and some peace and quiet.

Two for the price of one on why Waikiki Beach is famous. Facing southwest, the shoreline of Waikiki is near perfect for sunsets. Tiki bars, beach bars, swimming pool bars, and rooftop bars line Waikiki Beach. All ready to serve up happy hour drinks and sunsets. Waikiki is famous for its sunsets. Only a few beaches on Oahu have such an epic setting and viewpoint for the sunset.

One can feel safe in numbers while swimming and surfing in Waikiki. A large number of people make shark attacks less likely. The lack of shark attacks helps to build Waikiki as a safe spot to vacation and builds its popularity around the world. Lifeguard towers and an army of lifeguards do patrol the beach. They keep an eye on the sharks in the water, as the sharks are swimming out there.

You can find what you are looking for at the right price. Best of all, Waikiki is within a half-hour of a variety of Oahu attractions. For a taste of local Honolulu neighborhoods, not as touristy as Waikiki, head over to Kapahulu Avenue and the arts district of Chinatown. This next area of Waikiki Beach is probably the one of the nicer sections of sand that is also less crowded.

Fort DeRussy Beach Park is the only section in the surrounding upper Waikiki area that provides a beautiful grassy park setting with palm trees, shade, and picnic tables. You will also find surf board racks, beach volley ball nets, and tennis courts in the area. They have tried to replenish the sand a few times, but the continuous erosion, has left this area more as a point, than a beach. Probably one of the oldest sections of Hawaii Waikiki Beach.

Royal Hawaiian Beach is a great spot to catch a Catamaran chartered ride or paddle out on a Hawaiian outrigger canoe, or even take on surfing Waikiki Beach waves.

The only rough waters that you will find at Kuhio Beach are the waves that roll into the protected areas by the pond walls.

Fun as it sounds, the walls are covered in algae and are quite slippery and hazardous. Consider yourselves warned! Parasail along the Waikiki shoreline and take in the beautiful views and the surrounding beach activity from a few hundred feet above the ocean.

Parasailing Waikiki includes hotel transportation, boat ride, and no experience needed. This is where I first learned how to boogie board in the waves as a kid. I would surf all day until I either got tired or felt the sunburn on my back! We would always start off with a ceremonial jump into the ocean off the end of the Wall which is off limits today and paddle out to the waves.
