Where is quake lake

The devastating 7. It was felt as far away as Salt Lake City, it altered the geysers of Yellowstone National Park, and affected the water levels of wells as far away as Hawaii and Puerto Rico. At Hebgen Lake itself, near the epicenter, the quake caused a 50 million cubic yard landslide that rushed down the side of Sheep Mountain at as much as miles per hour and created hurricane force winds. The landslide crashed into the Madison River about six miles downstream from Hebgen Dam, completely blocking the river.

The earthquake created a massive landslide of about 80 million tons of rock, which stopped the flow of the Madison River in the Madison River Canyon gorge. The lake measures five miles long, one-third of a mile wide, and feet deep. Today many fishermen enjoy fishing by boat or along the shores of the lake. The shoreline is accessible from Highway and a boat ramp can also be found.

Cutthroat and brown trout are stocked yearly. Float tube fishing is not the best way to fish because of the many timbers below the surface and the occasional high winds. When you arrive, pick up a Visitor Guide to the Earthquake Lake Geologic Area and check the upcoming times for scheduled movies and talks. Check the Custer Gallatin National Forest website for exact dates and hours of operation and directions.
