Where is pazzi chapel
The stone bench that runs along the walls served as sitting space for the monks. Photo by Gryffindor. The decoration of the chapel has a functional feel. The roundels are amongst the best creations of Luca Della Robbia , their blues stand out against the white and grey of the walls. The one placed at the four sides of the dome are most likely designed by Brunelleschi, and underneath them you see the coat of arms of the Pazzi family with two dolphins.
Brunelleschi decided not to have an altar piece so as to keep the decoration to a minimum. The dome of the apse has a simple fresco of the sky over Florence. The portico at the entrance constitutes the facade of the chapel. It has six Corinthian columns and a centre raised as a triumphal arch. As you walk under it you can see the elaborate and vivid decoration inside the dome created by Luca della Robbia in glazed terracotta. The construction work was still underway when a tragic incident shocked Florence.
It happened on the 26th April , when the two brothers, attending mass in Florence Cathedral , were attacked by supporters of the Pazzi with the aid of the Pope.
The Pazzi wanted to stop the Medici hegemony over Florence, but though they managed to kill Giuliano, Lorenzo escaped and took a terrible revenge against them. Brunelleschi is buried in the cathedral. The Pazzi Chapel is a small but perfectly proportioned building employing sound geometric plans using squares, rectangles and circles. In short, it's a near-perfect example of Renaissance symmetry.
Work was begun in and completed in , after the death of the famous architect. The temple-like structure is encased within the ecclesiastic complex of Santa Croce, the great Gothic church which holds some of Florence's most famous tombs and frescoes.
The Pazzi Chapel is set in the quiet cloister and is flanked by an arched portal topped by a loggia. The portal bears domed and decorative elements as a grand entryway. Windows were carefully placed to allow natural light to filter in, giving full effect to the dome, which is capped by a lantern.
Embedded around the dome are ceramic inserts by Della Robbia. The stone bench around the side of the chapel reminds us that it was used as the friars' chapter house. A raised chancel surmounted by a small dome opens off the east wall. Sculptural decoration is subordinate to the architecture, with a frieze of medallions containing the Lamb of God alternating with pairs of Cherubim and Seraphim running around the upper part of the chapel, while below it twelve glazed terracotta tondoes made by Luca and Andrea della Robbia between and contain likenesses of the Apostles.
The four polychrome terracotta tondoes with the Evangelists set in the squinches of the dome are attributed to Brunelleschi. The two stained-glass windows in the chancel were designed by Alesso Baldovinetti: in the oculus we see God the Father Blesing , while St. Members of the Salviati and Pazzi families were arrested and murdered, with the bodies hanged demonstratively on the facade of the Palazzo Vecchio including Archbishop Francesco de "Pazzi. The Pazzi were expelled from the city.
The chapel remained as it was and has remained empty ever since. The Pazzi family were not the only instigators of the plot. The Salviati, Papal bankers in Florence, were at the centre of the conspiracy. Pope Sixtus was approached for his support. He made a very carefully worded statement in which he said that in the terms of his holy office he was unable to sanction killing. He made it clear that it would be of great benefit to the papacy to have the Medici removed from their position of power in Florence, and that he would deal kindly with anyone who did this.
He instructed the men to do what they deemed necessary to achieve this aim, and said that he would give them whatever support he could. You can view the bus routes at the Florence transit site: www.
